Coordinated by the Urban Butterfly Initiative, Butterfly Big Day is a worldwide collaboration of butterfly organizations (Regional Partners) to sponsor a global day-long iNaturalist butterflying event. It is designed for people of all ages to document, celebrate, and learn more about butterflies and other pollinators, and how we can help their populations.

People all over the world can contribute by submitting their photographs of free-living butterflies (not captive-reared or from butterfly houses) to the community science project iNaturalist. You don't have to know the species - iNaturalist and butterfly experts will help. Submit your picture even if you think it might be a moth - if it turns out to be a butterfly, it will count!

All photos of butterflies submitted to iNaturalist that are observed anywhere in the world on Sep 12, 2026 count toward the Big Day!

IT’S GOOD FOR BUTTERFLIES: Sadly, scientists have documented significant declines in butterfly populations around the world, likely due mainly to habitat destruction, pesticide use, and the global climate crisis. By increasing awareness of local butterflies, we hope that people around the world will start making the changes in land development, pesticide use, and landscaping practices that butterflies and other organisms need to be successful.

IT’S GOOD FOR NATURE:  Besides being beautiful and friendly representatives of nature, butterflies provide a fantastic connection to the food web of many terrestrial habitats. The caterpillars typically feed on plants native to their region, the adults are often pollinators, and many other animals rely on larval and adult butterflies for food. Consequently, keeping track of which butterfly species are present in any location provides important data on how our natural world is doing and what steps we need to take to help it thrive.

IT’S GOOD FOR PEOPLE:  Whether you butterfly alone or with a group of others who also love butterflies, it's fun!! Spending time in nature provides many health benefits to people, as does connecting to other people with similar interests. And what better reason to spend time in nature than looking for butterflies!

By participating in the Big Day, you are helping track and identify the variety of butterflies on our planet as well as contributing valuable, publicly accessible, scientific data on our butterfly populations!
